Betterment

My novel exploring a (possible) near future in Southeast Michigan in which neglected infrastructure of pipes and waste management have lead to a contaminant outbreak, causing a medical crisis. The resulting panic shifts military power into the medical field, intensifies racial segregation and severely restricts the mobility of minority communities (primarily African-American) in terms of housing, health, and employment. The protagonist, sister to the first minority to die in a state-sanctioned "culling" of the contaminated population, tries to navigate the grief of her brother's death, protect her younger brother from meeting the same fate, and avoid being sent off to quarantine.
